 Eliana Tardío is the mother of 2 children with Down´s syndrome, and they are not twins. For some people, this could be an excuse to crumble and to lose hope and faith in life. Tardío, however, turned this twist of fate into fuel for her life-purpose. Born in Bolivia 32 years ago, Tardío always wanted to be a writer. She is now a two-times published author, and her books are named after her babies. Emir of My Life, Leader of my Soul, is the heart-felt story of her pregnancy and the birth of her first child, who is now 5 years old, and Ayelén, the Joy in my Life, is dedicated to her second child, a girl. She wrote these books as a catharsis and also to share her experience and give hope to other parents of children with Down´s syndrome. “At first it was hard to figure out how to keep on going”, shares Tardío, “but with faith and perseverance, I have built my present and the future of my children.” More than a mom, she is also a successful professional serving the Health Department of Collier County in Florida and Healthy Start, as a Family Specialist and Educational Outreach. She is now writing her third book, and she is also a leader and advocate for parents of kids with special needs around the world. “It may be hard to believe,” she says, “but a potentially traumatic experience has turned out to be the best gift in my life, and not only has it brought me two beautiful angels, but it also gave me a mission and a reason to be happy.”
Tardío claims that the feeling of love has helped her in her journey, as well as perseverance and patience.
“People who support me and celebrate my success are special, but those who criticize are important to, because they help me realize that even though I am not perfect, there is always a perfect place for me and my loved ones.”
If doubt creeps in, she looks back on all the things she has managed to accomplish, and feels empowered.
“I celebrate every simple thing and enjoy my children´s smiles, hugs and kisses.”
Tardío believes life´s challenges are required to become stronger and that both the good times and the not-so-good moments must both be celebrated.
Eliana Tardío is my antidote to feelings of “having a bad day”. If she can write and publish books, free-lance, network, keep a job or two, devote time and effort to her children with special needs and her husband, and always wear a smile and have a great attitude, anyone can!
Eliana Tardío es la mamá de dos nenes con síndrome de Down, y no son gemelos ni mellizos. Algunas personas encontrarían en esto la excusa perfecta para derrumbarse y perder la esperanza y la fe. Tardío, sin embargo, convirtió este capricho del destino en el motor de su propósito de vida.

“Al principio, me costó entender cómo podría seguir adelante”, dice, “pero con fe y esperanza, he construido mi presente y el futuro de mis hijos”.
Además de madre, es una profesional de éxito que trabaja con el departamento de salud del condado de Collier en Florida para el programa "Pasos Tempranos" y con Healthy Start Coalition, como especialista en la familia y enlace educativo.
Ahora escribe su tercer libro y también es líder y portavoz de padres de niños con necesidades especiales en todo el mundo. Tardío creó la red social en español: www.redsocialelianatardio.com, a este efecto.
“Puede que resulte difícil de creer”, explica, “pero lo que es una experiencia traumática en potencia ha resultado ser el mejor regalo de mi vida y no solo me ha traído dos ángeles bellísimos, sino también una misión y un motivo para ser feliz”.
Tardío asegura que el sentimiento del amor le ha ayudado a salir adelante, además de la perseverancia y la paciencia. “Quienes me apoyan y celebran mi éxito son especiales, pero los que me critican también son importantes, porque me ayudan a darme cuenta de que, aunque no soy perfecta, siempre hay un lugar perfecto para mí y para mis seres queridos”.
Si alguna vez siente dudas o inseguridad, echa la vista atrás y recuerda cada uno de sus logros y eso le da fuerza. “Celebro cada cosa por sencilla que sea y disfruto de las sonrisas, los abrazos y los besos de mis hijos”.
Tardío cree que los retos de la vida son necesarios para adquirir fortaleza y que hay que celebrar tanto los momentos buenos como los que no lo son tanto.

Emir means Leader. He is 6 years old and has down syndrome. His name reflects his mission in Eliana's life. He is the leader of her soul and thanks to him Eliana discovered her way and the reason of her life.
Emir que significa Lider en español con 5 años de vida tiene síndrome de down. Su nombre refleja su misión en la vida de Eliana. Emir es el líder de su alma; título que utilizó para lanzar su primer libro y le ayudó a encontrar su camino y la razón de su existencia.

Ayelén that means happiness. She is Eliana´s girl. Ayelén´s propability to be born with down syndrome was 5%, even that having a second child was Eliana´s dream to give Emir a regular sister or brother. Eliana always tells people that she asked God for the perfect daughter for her and the perfect sister for Emir, that´s how Ayelén came in to this world, as the most beautiful and wonderful present ever imagined.
Ayelén que significa Alegría en español es la niña de Eliana. La probabilidad de Ayelén de haber nacido con síndrome de down era del 5%, motivo por el cual Eliana soñó con darle a Emir una hermana o hermano regular. Eliana siempre comenta que antes de quedar embarazada le pidió a Dios la hija perfecta y la hermana perfecta para Emir. Así fue como Ayelén llegó a su vida; como la más hermosa y maravillosa sopresa que nadie jamás imaginó.
